Veep arrives in India; Chhota Rajan to land soon

Date:

Vice President Hamid Ansari on Thursday night reached New Delhi and will meet his Chinese counterpart in the national capital on Friday. He left Indonesia for India after cancelling his visit to Brunei which got delayed following closure of the Bali airport due to the spewing of volcanic ash from a nearby mountain.

Ansari was scheduled to leave Bali for Brunei on Wednesday but the flight was cancelled. He called off his visit to Brunei and left for New Delhi by a special flight. Local authorities had closed the Ngurah Rai International Airport here on Tuesday due to a large ash cloud drifting from Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the nearby island.

Underworld don Chhota Rajan was on Thursday deported to India and is expected to reach Delhi early morning on Friday, 27 years after he had fled the country in the face of numerous cases of murder, extortion and drug smuggling against him.

The Indian fugitive was stuck in Bali since Tuesday as all the airport services were shut following the volcanic eruption in Bali.

The aircraft will bring Rajan to India along with the team of officials camping in Bali to get him.

Ahead of his arrival, the Maharashtra government said all the cases against him have been transferred to the CBI. Additional Chief Secretary K P Bakshi told reporters at a hurriedly-called press conference that all the cases against 55-year old Rajan, who has been deported from Indonesia, are being transferred to CBI because of its expertise in “handling transnational crimes”.

Meanwhile it is an action packed day at north block as well. The high level meeting between Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval at north block has ended.

Rajan had received the consular access on Sunday and the gangster was all set to be deported to India after the last leg of Rajan’s deportation was completed in Indonesia on Tuesday. The Denpasar Immigration Chief along with the Jakarta Interpol had questioned him at the Bali Police Headquarters.

In an explosive revelation on Tuesday morning, Rajan had alleged that some officials in the Mumbai Police are working with India’s most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.

“Mumbai Police has committed a lot of atrocities on me and I don’t trust them. There are some in the Mumbai Police who are working with Dawood. The Delhi Government should do justice with me keeping that in mind. I am not scared of Dawood and I will continue fighting against him and terrorism,” Rajan had told the media.

Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is wanted in over 75 crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking. Mumbai Police has nearly 70 cases registered against Rajan, including 20 of murder, four cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

Delhi Police has six cases registered against Rajan, who was a close aide of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim at one point but split before the 1993 Mumbai blasts were conspired.
