Bali Volcano delays Rajan’s deportation yet again; Veep stranded

Date:

Bali (Indonesia): Most-wanted gangster Chhota Rajan’s deportation from Bali got delayed yet again on Wednesday after a volcanic eruption shut down the airport in the resort island.

The Ngurah Rai International Airport has been temporarily shut down following haze and all flights have been grounded, officials said. Rajan is now likely to leave on Thursday when the airport reopens.

However, it isn’t just Rajan who’s stuck in Bali. India’s Vice President Hamid Ansari, who had travelled to Bali, is also stranded there and will return only when the airports resume services again.

Earlier, Jakarta Interpol had confirmed that underworld don Chhota Rajan, who was arrested in Bali, would be deported to India on Wednesday morning. Rajan’s flight was scheduled to leave Bali airport at 11 pm (Bali local time) on Tuesday.

Rajan was all set to be deported to India soon as the last leg of Rajan’s deportation was completed in Indonesia. The Denspar Immigration Chief along with the Jakarta Interpol questioned him at the Bali Police Headquarters.

In an explosive revelation on Tuesday morning, Rajan alleged that some officials in the Mumbai Police are working with India’s most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.

“Mumbai Police has committed a lot of atrocities on me and I don’t trust them. There are some in the Mumbai Police who are working with Dawood. The Delhi Government should do justice with me keeping that in mind. I am not scared of Dawood and I will continue fighting against him and terrorism,” Rajan told the media.

A joint team of CBI officials, Mumbai and Delhi police had left for Indonesia on Monday to seek deportation of Chhota Rajan, the underworld don who was arrested on October 25. Rajan was given consular access on Sunday.

According to sources, First Secretary (consular) Sanjeev Kumar Agrawal met Rajan for at the detention centre in Bali on Monday where he was lodged since his arrest last Sunday. Agrawal, who is based in the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, flew to Bali and went straight to the police centre to meet 55-year-old Rajan.

The consular access to Rajan came two days after Indonesian police submitted a report to the Indian Embassy about Rajan’s detention.

Rajan was arrested on October 25 by Indonesian police at the Bali airport after an alert issued by the Australian authorities. He had been living in Australia for last few years. Rajan was carrying an Indian passport issued in the name of Mohan Kumar when he was arrested.

Due to lack of an extradition treaty, the Indian authorities had provided documents to their Indonesian counterparts about his Indian identity to facilitate his deportation.

According to reports, special police commandos have been provided for the security of the officials who are in Bali and special commandos of Indonesian Police are already providing round-the-clock security for Rajan.

Chhota Rajan has most of his cases registered in Mumbai and therefore he is likely to be brought back to Mumbai and lodged in Arthur road jail. In lieu of his arrival, jail officials are thinking about roping in a paramilitary force, considering that many inmates of the prison are from rival gangs.

A source in the jail said Rajan is likely to be kept in the same high- security cell that housed Kasab for four years.

Rajan was a close aide of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim at one point of time but they split after the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
