Japan opens worlds first robot-staffed hotel

Date:

You step inside a hotel and a dinosaur welcomes you at the reception. Sounds Scary? Well, a hotel in Japan just did the same. The reception desk is staffed by a robot dinosaur.

Yes you read it right! A robot-staffed hotel, said to be the world’s first, has been opened in Japan on Friday, where guests checking into the futuristic facility, will be greeted and served by remarkably human-like robots.

The new Japanese hotel – Henn-na Hotel in Nagasaki – seems more like Jurassic Park than home away from home. A dinosaur robot points guests to the touch screen where they can check themselves in at the hotel in southwestern Japan, which is part of the Huis Ten Bosch amusement park.

The hotel is partially staffed by what are termed ‘actroid’ androids – remarkably human-like robots that will greet the customers, carry luggage to rooms, make cups of coffee – and even smile. The robots can Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English.

In hotel rooms, a “lamp-size robot” can tell guests the time, the weather, and turn off the lights for them. Others are supposed to be able to deliver room service. And a robotic arm can hand guests a box for storing their valuables and then put the box into the wall.

The two-story hotel has 72 rooms at present and the second phrase will be completed in 2016, with additional 72 rooms.

The hotel has three robots that act as receptionists apart from four service and porter robots, and others engaged in menial tasks such as cleaning.

Features:

The robots will eventually run 90% of the property.

Guestroom doors are accessed by facial-recognition technology.

Amenities provided in rooms will be kept minimal. Guests can request items through a tablet when needed.

Instead of air-conditioning, a radiation panel detects body heat in rooms and adjusts the temperature.

Solar power and other energy-saving features are used to reduce operating costs.

Bid for rooms:

Room rates vary depending on demand. Instead of being presented with a fixed price, guests will bid for rooms during peak season. The highest bidders will secure rooms, though there will be a price cap on bidding.

The hotel said room rent starts from 7,000 Yen ($60) for a single room to 18,000 Yen ($153), the highest possible price after bidding, for a triple room.

Superior and deluxe rooms will cost more. Guests can already reserve rooms online through the hotel’s website.
