Dalits: Children of a lesser God?

Date:

Ajmer/Jaipur: We human beings at times think too highly of ourselves. We brand and tag others, throw our weight around. It’s so convenient, no, to push one section of the society, citing castes and creeds and all of that.

We let them plummet to depths from which they can never recover. And then, some people just feel like they’re Gods – they have the power to create and destroy. Live and let live is perhaps a story stuck to books only.

This week, there was one strata of the society that was fleeing – not because of any natural calamity, but because of this wild breed of human being. Yes, humans. Hundreds of Dalits from Nagaur district’s Dangawas and surrounding villages tried to escape from the clutches of the ‘upper caste’, the Jats. Why? Because they felt it’s absolutely fine to mow down three Dalits under tractors.

Wait, they didn’t even stop at that. They also wounded a dozen others. All this for the sake of some archaic land dispute. And because in this scuffle one ‘upper caste’ guy lost his life, all fury was let loose on the innocent ones.

Following this, heavy police force was deployed at Dangawas, around 250 km from Jaipur, to enable the funeral rites of those killed, but no arrest was made. Despite this, some horrendous crimes against dalit women – molestation, beating, and repeated attempts to disrobe them – were committed. As expected, the number of injured people is only rising.

To add to it, the Jats even enveloped the hospital, preventing the doctors from treating the Dalits. Hundreds of armed attackers reached Merta City and it took several policemen to ensure that no untoward incident took place.

Disrobing the women, trying to insert sticks into their private parts, clubbing them with iron rods – and we thought human beings were better than animals.
