Angry workers refuse to ply DTC buses after drivers brutal death

Date:

New Delhi: Protesting against lack of security, Delhi Transport Corporation drivers have refused to run the buses on Monday.

The strike comes a day after DTC bus driver Ashok Kumar was beaten to death in broad daylight allegedly by a motorcylist.

Later in the day on Sunday, the accused motorcylist was arrested for allegedly beating the DTC driver to death in Mundka in a case of road rage.

Holding firm on their stand, the DTC drivers and conductors have said that they will not allow buses to ply until victim’s family is given a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a family member is given a permanent job in DTC.

“We will be on strike on Monday. DTC buses will not run as workers are angry due to incident and are not certain about their security. We have put three demands before the government. A) 1 crore compensation for victim, B) permanent job for victim’s family member, C) security assurance for all workers. If all demands are met, all drivers will return to work,” Tara Chand, general Secretary DTC Bus Association said.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the vitims’s family and has also said it will offer a job to his family member.

According to reports, no passenger of the bus or any passerby came forward to save Kumar as he was allegedly attacked by the motorcyclist. They said that the man on the bike had beaten Kumar with his helmet continuously for few minutes and then fled the spot.

“The assailant pulled him off the bus and beat him. Some people tried to help, but the assailant threatened them. Everyone just stood by as my father was beaten to death,” the victim’s son said.
