New Delhi: Fresh mild tremors jolted parts of North India on Sunday morning a day after a massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale caused widespread devastation in Nepal and parts of India.
Aftershocks of the magnitude of 6.5 measuring on the Richter Scale were felt both in Nepal and India.
European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimates intensity at 6.5 on the Richter scale.
United States Geological Survey estimates intensity at 6.7 on the Richter.
Indian Meteorological Department has pegged the intensity of the latest earthquake at 6.9 on the Richter scale.
Soon after, the defence ministry, which is helping with the relief and rescue operations in Nepal, suspended vehicular and air traffic there. “All movement to Kathmandu kept on hold till 4 pm due to fresh tremors in Nepal,” tweeted a spokesperson of Defence ministry.
In India, besides Delhi, the tremors were also felt in Lucknow and Jaipur. And in Bihar, where 35 people died in yesterday’s quake, the tremors went on for several minutes.
Both agencies have identified epicenter in Nepal, about 85 km east of Kathmandu and 30 km southeast of Kodari.
According to reports, several key buildings in the national capital were seen shaking.
At 3:30 PM on Sunday the Prime Minister has called a high level meeting to review the situation arising due to the Earthquake. The review meeting called will be looking at the relief work and other issues arising due to the Earthquake.
Climber Jim Davidson said he felt the aftershock at Camp One on Everest. “Just had our biggest aftershock yet here at C1 on Everest. Smaller than original quake but glacier shook & avalanches,” he tweeted.
All movement to Kathmandu kept on hold till 1600 Hrs due to fresh tremors in Nepal.
Giving details of the aftershocks, GL Gautam, director of the Indian Meteorological Department, said, “More aftershocks will follow… This will continue for weeks… northern India would not face much of a problem.”
The death toll of the earthquake in Nepal has risen to over 2000 in 24 hours with rescue and evacuation currently underway.
