Srinagar: Separatist leaders Yasin Malik and Masarat Alam were detained by police on Tuesday while they were on their way to Tral. The leaders were reportedly detained from different areas in Awantipore.
The two leaders were enroute to Tral a day after a suspected militant was killed by the Army in the forests area in south Kashmir’s Pulwana district.
While locals claimed that the deceased, Khalid Muzaffar, was a civilian, security forces have alleged that he was a militant.
The body of another deceased, Younis was retrieved from the “encounter†site earlier on Tuesday.
At least six people were injured after protests against the killing of Khalid turned violent after his funeral with hundreds of people pelting stones at security forces.
The security forces then fired tear smoke shells and pellet guns to clear the protesting crowd.
During the clash, protesters reportedly snatched an AK-47 rifle of a CRPF soldier. The injured were later taken to the hospital for treatment.
The encounter had taken place after the Army was informed about the presence of militants in the area.
The Army later claimed that two assault rifles and two magazines were recovered from the possession of the militant.
