New Delhi: Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra took a big dive helming a Hollywood project titled ‘Broken Horses’. But the film opened with negative responses from critics in the West.
Set in the shadows of the US-Mexico border gang wars, “Broken Horses” is an epic thriller about the bonds of brotherhood, the laws of loyalty and the futility of violence.
The movie has been received with mostly positive reviews in India.
But the case is not the same in the West. Many leading US dailies have given mixed to negative reviews to the motion picture. Rotten Tomatoes, a leading critics aggregator has rated the movie a mere 1.5 stars out of 5.
Even though the performances have been appreciated, the film seems to have failed to impress many of the critics.
One of the leading website tagged the film as “far too absurd to be taken seriouslyâ€.
“The film seems to be aiming for a surreal quality that it never manages to pull off successfully,†the website added.
But the movie managed to impress acclaimed Hollywood directors James Cameron and Alfonso Cuaron.
“‘Broken Horses’ is an artistic triumph. Beautifully written, acted and imaged, this film wraps slowly around you like a king snake and squeezes,†Cameron earlier said.
Starring MarÃa Valverde, Thomas Jane, Anton Yelchin, Vincent D’Onofrio and Sean Patrick Flanery, the mystery thriller is set against the drug war in the troubled-Mexican border.
Chopra is known for his hit Hindi films like the Munnabhai franchise, ‘3 Idiots’ and most recently ‘PK’. His Bollywood ventures have been well received by people and ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘PK’ even managed to break the Box Office records.
However, even if this film fails to make a ring at the BO, it will still mark a huge leap for mainstream Indian movie directors. It is a mirror to more such projects. Bollywood is going global!
