Womens downhill ski competition cancelled

Date:

The women’s World Cup downhill at the Austrian resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim on Saturday was postponed due to strong winds, organisers announced.

Gusts reaching 105 km/h combined with mild temperatures of 14 degrees made staging the event impossible.

However, organisers said that the super-G scheduled for Sunday would still go ahead, despite the fact that no drop in temperature is forecast in the meantime.

“A super-G is quite possible,” International Ski Federation (FIS) race director Atle Skaardal announced after a mid-day inspection.

The race start will be brought forward slightly to 1000 GMT to avoid the forecast bad weather.

American speed queen Lindsey Vonn had been hoping to use this weekend to equal Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record of 62 World Cup wins set in 1980. Vonn is currently on 61.
