Morgan suffers Six Nations injury scare

Date:

Gloucester forward Ben Morgan suffered a Six Nations injury scare as the England star was carried off during his Premiership club’s 24-23 win over Saracens on Friday.

Morgan, who was one of England’s more impressive performers during the November Tests, suffered a left leg injury early in the second half of a thrilling encounter at Kingsholm that was eventually settled by James Hook’s stoppage-time penalty.

England open their Six Nations campaign in four weeks against Wales in Cardiff and head coach Stuart Lancaster will be hoping Morgan was not seriously hurt.

Referee JP Doyle stopped the game immediately after Morgan was tackled just short of the Saracens line and a lengthy spell of treatment followed.

There could be more bad news for Lancaster as Saracens’ England lock George Kruis may attract the citing commissioner’s attention after he escaped with a yellow card following a tip-tackle on Gloucester wing David Halaifonua.

Lancaster’s concerns couldn’t completely overshadow a fine match in which tries by scrum-half Dan Robson and his second-half replacement Callum Braley underpinned Gloucester’s first Premiership win on home soil since they beat Leicester three months ago.

Fly-half Hook added 14 points from the boot, including his last-gasp clincher.

Saracens had to settle for a losing bonus point after mustering an early penalty try, scores from Billy and Mako Vunipola and two penalties and a conversion from Alex Goode.
