Deprived kids less likely to study at top universities

Date:

London: A new survey has found that poorer pupils are less likely to study at top universities like Oxford and Cambridge.

The survey described that regardless of the fact that Government has urged the universities to take more applicants from the state school system, pupils at Eton and Westminster School are 1,000 times more likely to make it to a top University than a pupil poor enough to eat free school meals, reportedly.

Lee Elliot-Major, director of policy and development at educational charity the Sutton Trust said that their research showed that getting to top universities makes all the difference to getting a good job and all bright kids should have those chances, not just those whose parents can pay high fees.

He added that the Government should come up with a national programme of support for highly able children from low and middle income backgrounds.

The Department for Education mentioned that tackling the attainment gap has been a priority for the Government, and their plan for education is on process, so every child has the opportunity to realise their potential.

The Educational Department also explained that disadvantaged primary school pupils achieved their best ever results this year and the attainment gap between rich and poor is narrowing faster now-a-days than when this Government came to power.
