Of masks and magic: The Carnival of Venice

Date:

One of the oldest festivals in the world, the Carnevale di Venezia is an annual carnival held in Venice, Italy. Participants wear masks and participate in various events such as parades, balls, competitions, performances and plays. The current edition of the festival was inaugurated on 31st December 2014, and will go on till 17th February.

One of the most unique experiences in the world, tourists and locals participate with equal enthusiasm in this celebration of eighteenth century Venice. Approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for the carnival.

How it all began: Origin & History

The Carnival is said to have begun as a celebration of the victory of  Serenissima Repubblica against the Patriarch of Aquileia in the year 1162. The festival gained momentum during the Renaissance. The festival was outlawed entirely in 1797 under the rule of the King of Austria, and the use of masks became strictly forbidden.

The festival reappeared gradually during the nineteenth century, but only for short periods and for private feasts. In an effort to bring back the history and culture of Venice, and promote the city as a tourist destination, the Italian government decided to bring back the festival in 1979.

Masks:

Wearing masks is a deep rooted part of Venetian culture. People would wear masks to render themselves anonymous, in order to indulge in any activity that was socially unacceptable: taking a jibe at the powerful, gambling, or take risks over love or business. Initially, people were allowed to wear masks between the festival of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen’s Day, December 26) and the start of the carnival season at midnight of Shrove Tuesday. Masks were also allowed on Ascension and from October 5 to Christmas, enabling people to spend a large portion of the year in disguise. Mask makers enjoyed a special position in society, with their own laws and their own guild.
There are various designs of masks worn during the festival, identifying with different occupations. Bauta, Columbina, Medico della Pesta are some of the more popular styles.  In fact, one of the most important events is the contest for la maschera più bella (“the most beautiful mask”) placed at the last weekend of the Carnival, judged by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.

Visit the Carnevale:

Although Venice is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year, the city takes on a different form during the carnival. Some people recommend visiting the city one week before the carnival actually starts, to take in the atmosphere while avoiding the crowds. It is always best to book travel and accommodation in advance. High end hotels usually host masquerade balls, but these are private affairs and are relatively expensive. Most of the events are held in San Marco’s square, but there is a celebration going on in every small part of the city, so make sure you explore as much as you can on foot.
