The hippest festivals this January

Date:

Welcome the New Year with some of the most happening fests around the world this January!

World Busker’s Fest, New Zealand (Jan 16-26): First held in 1993 in Christchurch, the World Buskers Fest is a celebration of various forms of performance arts: vaudeville, comedians, trapeze artists and street performers. Founded by Jodi Wright, who is also the current artistic director, the festival lasts for about 11 days and typically attracts about 300,000 people every year. The Scirt World Buskers Festival distinguishes itself from other busker festivals because of the scale and the variety that it offers. The festival’s jaw dropping displays spread over the city make for an enthralling experience for its visitors.

Banff Snowdays, Canada (Jan 9-Feb 8): Held in the Banff National Park in the city of Banff, this festival is all about celebrating the wonders of winter. Ice sculptures, snow sports, food and music: this festival has it all. A visit to the famous hot springs at the National Park is highly recommended, besides taking out some time to explore the natural beauty surrounding it. The Ice Magic Festival at Lake Louise is one of the greatest attractions to be witnessed, alongside skiing competitions and ice hockey matches to be witnessed.

Carnevale, Venice (Jan 31- Feb 17): A celebration in vintage gowns and masks, the Carnevale is one of the most famous festivals of the world. Masquerade balls, parades, dancing and art exhibitions: the Carnival of Venice has it all. Although most of the parties are evolved versions of the traditional Venetian party, recent versions of the festival have taken inspiration from other countries, such as the zombie parade from the Zattere to the Pescheria.

Story of Light Fest, Goa (Jan 14-18): Featuring 45 artists from 15 different countries, the Story of Light festival in Goa explores the phenomenon of light. Science, art and philosophy come together through art and design, to explore applications and innovations in light science. The festivals seek to mark 2015 as the International Year of Light, as declared by the UN. Photography exhibitions, workshops, talks, public installations and more will be used to highlight the importance of light and its various forms to the general public. Goa’s scenic river banks, historical monuments and beaches will make for wonderful venues for the event.
