Both Houses of Parliament adjourned

Date:

New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament which begun on Monday was adjourned due to the demise of Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP and former union minister Murli Deora early on Monday and Trinamool Congress Kapil Krishna Thakur, who passed away last month.

Both Houses were adjourned after new members were sworn in and obituaries were read.

The session comes at a time when the much-delayed Insurance Bill is seeking to allow more foreign capital is high on the government agenda along with the Goods and Service Tax Bill. This is the second major session of the Narendra Modi-led government since it came to power in May and government managers have made it clear that crucial legislation will be put on fast track.

To ensure smooth running of the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday had addressed an all party meeting on the eve of the Winter session. He raised hopes that winter session will go “very well” like the budget session. He said, “The budget session went on very well and was constructive and successful. We hope that the winter session will also be on the same lines.”

Modi also his referred to his Independence Day speech in which he had sought to give credit for work done during the budget session to both the government and the opposition.

“Unitedly, all important issues can be taken forward,” he said.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday that the Government is more willing to work on the suggestions of the opposition parties.

“The Government has given a list of bills which we want to take up in this session of parliament. Members of different parties wanted to discuss certain other important issues of public interest. The Government is more than willing to work on the suggestions of the opposition parties,” said Naidu after attending the all party meet held

Calling the meeting fruitful and meaningful, he informed that in both the houses of the Parliament, 26 political parties, 40 leaders were present in the meeting.

He further said, except the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) almost all political parties were present.

He also assured that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) issue is an important matter and will be addressed.

Adding to it he said that pros and cons of all aspects of Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) issue will be reviewed.

A meeting of Secretaries of various Ministries and Departments with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley earlier this week concluded that 39 bills may be ready for either introduction or consideration in this session being held from November 24 to December 23. It will have 22 sittings.
