Ruiz and Campbell given nod up front for Costa Rica

Date:

Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell were named up front for Costa Rica in their World Cup Group D opener against Uruguay in Fortaleza on Saturday, meaning Marco Urena has to be satisfied with a place on the bench.

Urena had joined coach Jorge Pinto at Friday’s pre-match press conference at the Castelao de Fortaleza stadium, giving the impression he would be starting the match.

But instead, Pinto has pushed Ruiz further forward from an expected attacking midfield role with Christian Bolanos taking his place in midfield.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez had already announced his starting line-up on Friday with veteran Diego Forlan partnering Edinson Cavani in attack while Luis Suarez is missing through injury.

Costa Rica

Keylor Navas; Christian Gamboa, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Michael Umana, Oscar Duarte, Junior Diaz; Celso Borges, Yeltsin Tejeda, Christian Bolanos; Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell

Coach: Jorge Luis Pinto (COL)

Uruguay
