Making the most out of studying abroad

Choosing to study abroad is a big decision, with high costs and a completely new environment, you need to make sure that you have thought it through. If done right, this could be one of the most unique periods of your life as you venture out into the world, young and independent. NewsMobile compiles a list of things to do, to make sure you are getting most out of an experience of a lifetime.

· Break out of your comfort zone– Don’t just try to make friends with people from a similar background to you, try mix with the local students as well.

· Set specific goals– Make sure you have an idea what you plan to do with your education and whether it leads to future opportunities back home or abroad.

· Miss home but don’t dwell– It’s perfectly natural to miss home but don’t let it consume all your time. Get out and about, and make new friends.

· Go to class– It’s very easy to lose focus when left by yourself but make sure you remember your aim, do try to make it to class once in a while!

· Wander and explore– That’s not to say that it’s all work and no play, learn about the local culture, visit landmarks and museums. Enjoy everything the place has to offer.

· Spend wisely– Make sure you budget for your weekly expenses; it’s very easy to burn through money as a new student in a foreign country.

· Consider getting a job or internship– Work experience abroad looks very good on your CV and will be an asset whether you’re looking to go back home or choosing to stay back and work.

· Enjoy– Most important of all, enjoy. These are precious years of your life, enjoy every moment of it.
