Goa govt calls off the junket

Panaji: The Goa government on Friday cancelled the “study trip” of its legislators after facing flake from all over. The BJP government  was reportedly spending Rs 89 lakh to send the MLAs on a 10-day trip to Brazil for a study tour of the World Cup.

Earlier, Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado had said, “All six Goa MLAs, ministers to go on Brazil trip at their own expense. We were in the limelight when we spent the exchequer’s money.”

Even though the decision was taken by Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Goa Congress leader Aleixo Regnald Lourenco said, “We don’t believe it. Some private business interests might sponsor the junket and the government must come out clean on this.” The opposition Congress called the trip a “wasteful expenditure” and sought Prime Minister’s intervention to “stop the junket”.

However, Parrikar had justified the “study tour” saying it will help in Goa’s preparations for the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017 since the tourist state could be one of the venues.
