It is believed that the crocodile came out of the nearby Shiva River which is home to many crocodiles as per reports. Ratnagiri is known for Mugger crocodiles who are one of the three crocodilian species in India, other than saltwater and gharial crocodiles.
Chiplun and the nearby areas in Ratnagiri have been receiving excessive rainfall for the past few days and due to this the water levels have also increased. As per IMD, the rain will continue until July 2 in the district. It is one of three crocodilian species in India, other than saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and gharial (Gavialis gangeticus).
The crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), also known as the Mugger and Marsh crocodile, is found in freshwater habitats – like marshes, lakes, rivers and ponds – in the Indian sub-continent.
