New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in New Delhi on Monday as the national capital is likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next 2 days.

The maximum temperature on Monday was recorded at 36.1 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees below normal and the minimum temperature settled at 27.4 degrees Celsius as per a PTI report.

Skymet in a post on X said “The past two days have seen some respite from the downpours in Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region). However, weather experts predict a resurgence in rain activity, likely intensified rainfall over Delhi starting from July 2.” As per IMD’s forecast, the national capital will be on an orange alert due to rainfall.

The forecast shows a cloudy sky for the whole week and will see moderate to heavy rains over the next two days and thunderstorms with gusty winds across the city. The IMD issued an orange alert for the national capital on Monday but no rainfall was recorded.

According to the IMD, a day’s worth of rainfall falling between 7.6 mm and 35.5 mm is considered moderate rain, and a day’s worth of rain falling between 64.5 mm and 124.4 mm is considered heavy rain. PTI reports that over the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Friday, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall, more than three times the average rainfall for June (74.1 mm), and the greatest amount for the month in 88 years since 1936. As per a PTI report, the IMD on Monday also clarified that the heavy rainfall in Delhi was not caused by the cloudburst.
