Fact Check: Video Of Men Falling Into A Manhole In Rajasthan Falsely Linked To Chennai

Date:

A video in which five men can be seen falling into a covered manhole is being shared widely on social media with a claim that the incident is from Chennai.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a Tamil caption, “சென்னையில் உங்கள் கடைக்கு முன்பு புதிதாக கட்டப்பட்டு வரும் மழைநீர் வடிகால் பிளாட்பாரத்தை கவனமாக பயன்படுத்தவும். ஏனென்றால் இந்த கட்டுமாணம் திராவிட மாடல் அரசால் கட்டப்படுகிறது”

(English translation: Carefully use the newly constructed rainwater drainage platform in front of your shop in Chennai. Because this structure is built by the Dravidian model government)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to the ABP news report which carried the same viral video with the headline, “Five Men Fall Into Covered Manhole In Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer, Video Goes Viral”.

Searching further, we found the same incident reported by several other news outlets including NDTV, Zee News and One India. According to one of the reports, “This video, which is becoming increasingly viral, is being told to be of of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. Where five people standing near a shop went one after the other to sink into the ground. After watching this video you too will not believe your eyes for a minute.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is from Rajasthan and not Chennai.
