Mumbai registers 55.1% voter turnout; highest since 1989

Date:

India’s financial capital recorded the highest voter turnout since 1989. As per sources and data from EC, it recorded 55.1% turnout across the 6 constituencies that make up Mumbai.
In 1989, it had recorded 57.7%.

Even though not a high percentage compared to other states and larger cities, Mumbai did see a moderate movement upwards in phase 4 of the Lok Sabha elections 2019. In 1991, it had recorded an all-time low of 41.6%. Even in 2009, it remained at approx. 41.6%. In 2014, it did touch the above-50% mark and closed at 51.6%.

A number of celebrities, Bollywood actors, industrialists came out to vote, their pictures enthralling the nation through the day.

However, the total number of electors in Mumbai this time was lower than the 2014 number by 2.5 lakhs.

Constituency wise, the highest turnout in the city was recorded in the Mumbai north constituency at 59.32%, where there is a stiff battle between veteran actor Urmila Matondkar of the Congress and the sitting BJP MP Gopal Shetty.

Bandra (West) recorded the lowest among the six polling areas, with a turnout of 50.01 %.

Despite the heat, people turned up in large numbers to vote. In the past too, many known celebrities had appealed to people to come out and cast their vote.

All six Mumbai seats are currently held by BJP-Sena alliance.
