Facial recognition to be mandatory for Aadhar card authentications

Date:

According to the latest announcements made by the Unique Identification Authority of India, a mandate has been passed for facial recognition to be used for Aadhar card authentication. The method for this would be taking live pictures on every Aadhar card application.

The most common users of this new method of authentication would be banks, government offices, mobile SIM providers, and the public distribution system. This would be an additional feature combined with the original authentication procedure which is currently only based on fingerprints and eye scans. The new method would assist individuals in a smoother and hassle-free identification process.

The UIDAI had rolled out circulars officially to the Authentication User Agencies, Authentication Service Agencies, and biometric device providers on July 19 and August 17 to implement this measure.

According to the circular, if there is any failure in adherence to the measure, criminal charges would be applied and punishments could include imprisonment or hefty fines under the Sections 42 and 43 of the Aadhar Act of 2016.
