Literacy drive: School students teaching others as part of

home work Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Aug 17 (PTI) School teachers ofGhusra village in Jharkhand have asked students to teach theirilliterate parents and relatives how to read and write as partof their home work. This is being done to achieve 100 per cent literacy inthe tribal-dominated village in East Singhbhum district,Deputy Collector Sanjay Kumar said today. As a part of the literacy mission launched by the stategovernment, Kumar had held a meeting with villagers on August7 when they had taken the pledge to turn Ghusra a 100 per centliterate village. Since then, literate members of the village, includingschool students, have been teaching at least one member of thevillage to achieve the target. Acting Principal of Upgraded Middle School Radha Kumarisaid the students were being asked to teach their illiterateparents and relatives as home work. The impact of the initiative is that the elderly peopleof the village did not hesitate to learn reading and writingfrom their children and grandchildren, he said. Besides, the literate daughter-in-law of the family isteaching her illiterate sister- and mother-in-law, while insome cases it is vice-versa, Kumar said. People are also being taught how to sign instead puttingtheir thumb impression, said the deputy collector. Kumar said the villagers had taken out a ‘literacy rally’on Independence Day. As per the 2011 Census, the literacy rate was 40.79 percent in Ghusra village. Of them, 26.49 per cent are women. PTIBS NNSMN
