Vijay Mallya, the Indian business tycoon who is accused of defaulting on loans worth crores of rupees, was arrested in London on Tuesday. The Scotland Yard issued a statement saying that they arrested Mallya on an “extradition warrant”. This is a massive success for India given that UK has never before given in to India’s request for extradition, be it Lalit Modi or Mallya. The United Kingdom had earlier refused expelling Mallya saying that he had a UK visa and was free to live in the country. This arrest proves that at least some headway was made. Even though Mallya was released on bail just three hours after his detention, this process gives India some hope that finally the defaulter will be brought to justice, even if the said process might take a bit longer. It is an achievement that Modi and team can be really proud of. There is now a strong possibility that Mallya might be deported to India to face legal consequences.
