COVID-19: Don’t panic; social distancing will help India stop spread

PM Narendra Modi, in a televised address to the nation, urged the citizens to maintain a ‘Janta curfew’ for 14 hours on March 22.

This will be a self imposed quarantine which will keep the streets sans mass gatherings. This will also give space to the authorities to work towards curbing the spread of this virus.

Everyday, fresh cases are being registered and this will prove to be a nightmare if it spreads at the community level.

The government has been able to isolate individual cases in the present situation but if it spreads at the community level, then it could be a Herculean task.

Hence, precautions are better than cure.

Second, activities under Swaach Bharat Abhiyan aimed at cleanliness can be better achieved with the cooperation of the people who will stay indoors.

This is bound to have an impact on the livelihoods of the people, especially the unorganised sector. They are already reeling under the pressure of various vicious economic forces and this will further isolate them unwillingly.

This could also be a test to determine future shutdowns in the country and it could lead to more such drastic measures. If the coronavirus impact remains.

Nevertheless, we should wholeheartedly support to curb the spread of this deadly virus. It is a preventive step being taken by the Prime Minister to avoid mass casualties.

Social distancing is the need of the hour. The faster we gauge this criticality and follow government guidelines, it would help us manage larger issues like economic stability in the future.
