Every year, World Environment Day is observed globally on June 5 to mark the importance of nature and the environment.
It also gives out a message to the global population that nature should not be undervalued and it should not be taken for granted at any cost.
Theme
The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’. The day is hosted by different countries around the globe. It has a participation of over 143 countries annually.
This year, the global host for the big day is Pakistan. On Wednesday, Pakistan kick-started the event with a cycling event to generate awareness regarding ecosystem restoration.
Significance
The event is celebrated across the globe to spread awareness about the need and significance of nature and frondescence. On this day, governments and normal citizens of various countries and states emphasise a particular environmental issue to generate mass awareness.
The day gives an opportunity to prove oneself as a responsible citizen by showing eagerness and willingness to help in enhancing and preserving mother nature.

History
In the year 1972, the UN General Assembly established World Environment Day on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. In 1974, the first World Environment Day (WED) was held with the theme ‘Only One Earth’. And then in 1987, the UN came up with an idea for rotating the host country for the celebrations of this day.
United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030
This year the day will also witness the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It is part of a sequence of joint efforts led by the WHO. This collaboration of WHO and UN aims to prevent and reverse the degradation of ecosystems and the diversity of life.
