Women’s Hockey World Cup: India Lose 0-1 to Ireland

In their second match of the ongoing 14th edition of the women’s hockey World Cup, Indian women’s hockey team lose 0-1 to Ireland on Thursday. The match took place at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Stadium, London.

India started off on an attacking note with skipper Rani Rampal penetrating into the opposition’s circle. Her efforts did not get converted into the goal as she was dispossessed by the Irish defenders.

In the fourth minute, Indian defender Gurjit Kaur struck a brilliant flick to create a chance for the team but once again was stopped by the Irish defender.

Anna O’Flanagan scored a brilliant one-handed deflection, the only goal of the match.

Forward player Sunita was given a green card in the 18th minute, due to which there were only 10 Indian players on the field for the next two minutes.

In the entire course of the match, India got 7 penalty corners but failed to score.

With this win, Ireland has booked a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament while India will play USA on July 29 to determine their fate. India had drawn their first match against England.
