United States of America withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

The United States of America has withdrawn from the United Nations Human Rights Council this Tuesday calling it of a “chronic bias against Israel”. This step was warned by the activists to make advancements in global human rights very difficult.

Nikki Haley, the American Ambassador to the UN said, “for too long, the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias.” He also slammed Russia, Egypt, China and Cuba for curbing US efforts to reform the council.

The last session of the 47-member council with statements against Donald Trump and his immigration policy by UN’s high commissioner of Human Rights.

The US is mid-way through the three-year term on the main UN rights body and the administration under President Trump had threatened to withdraw from the UN Human Right Council if the amendment in the 47-member council based out of Geneva was not made.
