This Photo of Rajiv and Rahul Gandhi is not from Indira’s funeral; Here’s the truth

Date:

An old picture is going viral on social media. The picture features Former Prime ministers Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao.

Both Prime ministers along with young Rahul Gandhi were seen offering prayers at a funeral.

The caption accompanying the picture claims that it was taken at the funeral of Indira Gandhi and that both Rajiv and Rahul Gandhi are offering ‘kalma’. “इन्दिरा की लाश के सामने राहुल और राजीव गांधी कलमा पढ रहे हैं फिर भी हमारे देश के लोगों को लगता है कि ये लोग ब्राह्मण हैं ? ?”

(Translation – In front of Indira’s corpse, Rahul and Rajiv Gandhi are studying Kalma. Even then, people in our country think that they are Brahmins??)

FACT CHECK

The very first that is wrong about this claim is that Rahul Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi can be seen offering prayers in front of the coffin. Whereas, Indira Gandhi was cremated. Here’s a picture from her final rites.

As far as the viral picture is concerned, On Google reverse search, we found out that the picture was taken at the funeral of a political leader, Abdul Ghaffar Khan.

On further research, we also found archival media reports supporting the fact that Rajiv Gandhi stopped at Peshawar to pay his final respect to Ghaffar Khan in January 1988.

This proves that though the picture is correct, the claim accompanying it is false.
