Sydney Test: Kuldeep Yadav equals 64-year-old record; claims five-wicket haul on Oz soil

Date:

Kuldeep Yadav on Sunday equalled a 64-year-old long-standing record after he ended the first innings with a five-for 99 runs as India restricted Australia to 300 runs on Day 4 of the fourth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Kuldeep Yadav is only second to England’s Johnny Wardle, who took 5 for 79 against the hosts at the SCG in 1955.

Kuldeep started his feat with Usman Khawaja’s wicket on Day 3, carrying on to take Travis Head and Tim Paine. On day 4 he picked up Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood.

While Yadav produced his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets each, and Jasprit Bumrah bagged one.

Skipper Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on on the hosts becoming the first team in last 30 years to do so against Australia on home soil. However, the morning session was washed out due to rain and bad light.

To get an early breakthrough in the second session, Shami dismissed Cummins (25) on the third delivery with the new ball.

Bumrah took his first wicket of the match in the name of Handscomb (37). Australia’s last recognised batsman, Nathan Lyon was too sent back to the pavilion as ace spinner Kuldeep trapped Lyon for a duck.

After a brief fightback from Mitchell Starc (29*) and Josh Hazlewood (21), Kuldeep again came into the picture and ended a 42-run stand.

In the second innings, Australia managed to score six runs in four overs before the day’s play was called off due to rain. The host trail by 316 runs following on.
