Having qualified for the US Open for the first time, Sumit Nagal is India’s latest tennis sensation. 22-year-old Sumit Nagal will face Swiss legend Roger Federer in the main draw of the 2019 US Open.

-Sumit Nagal, World No. 190, came up with terrific performances in the qualifying tournament. The 22-year-old outclassed Joao Menezes of Brazil in the final qualifying round, clinching a come-back-from-behind win — 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in 147 minutes.
-Sumit Nagal had reportedly hoped for a first-round outing with Roger Federer when he came to know that the Swiss great would be playing a qualifier in his US Open 2019 opener. And to his delight, the dream came true.
-Sumit Nagal, who won the Bengaluru Open ATP Challenger tournmaent in 2018, has been consistent at the Challenger level. However, making it to ATP tournaments had been a struggle. Nagal suffered a dip in form in 2019 and was bogged down by injury issues as well.
-However, in 2019, Sumit Nagal rose 171 places on the ATP rankings to enter the top 200 of men’s singles tennis. Apart from making his maiden main draw at an ATP 500 event in Hamburg earlier this year, Nagal gifted himself the biggest match of his career by performning well in the US Open qualifying.
-Sumit Nagal has become only the fifth Indian men’s singles player player to feature in a Grand Slam main draw in this decade.
Sumit Nagal could not have asked for a better Grand Slam debut. The young Indian player will be playing in front of a packed house at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night against his idol Roger Federer, whom he calls “the god of tennis”.
