‘Patakha Guddi’ moves HC

Date:

New Delhi: Punjabi folk and Sufi singer Jyoti Nooran, who recently got married, has been caught in a controversy over her age where her parents have claimed her to be a minor. While the Sufi singer rubbishes the charges and claims to have been born on February 24, 1994 and Kunal Passi (his husband) on February 26, 1988.

Jyoti came to limelight recently after she and her sister Sultana sung a popular song ‘Patakha Guddi’ for Imtiaz Ali’s Highway. The song was composed by A R Rahman.

The age controversy kicked off after Jyoti got married against the wishes of her parents. Jyoti, who claims to have firm belief in Hinduism, solemnised her marriage with Kunal, a resident of Mohalla Chaudhrian of Jalandhar district, in a Chandigarh temple on August 2 as per Hindu Vedic rites.

She has filed a petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, alleging threat to life from her family. She has also accused her parents of raking the age controversy as they wanted her to earn money for the family.

After accepting the singer’s application, the court has sent Jyoti and her husband Kunal Passi to a protection home. The court has also asked Jyoti to prove her age. The case has now been fixed for August 21 for further hearing.
