Pandemic Not Over Yet: PM Modi Cautions People Against COVID-19

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cautioned people against COVID19 and said that the virus has not gone away and keeps resurfacing. While addressing a virtual conference to mark the 14th Foundation Day Celebration at Umiya Mata Temple in Junagadh, Gujarat, the PM urged people to not let their guards down and also highlighted India’s successful nationwide vaccination drive.

Referring to the efforts during the pandemic, PM said that the virus is very deceptive and we have to remain vigilant against this. He said that India has performed an amazing feat of administering 185 crore doses of vaccines.

COVID19 New Variant

BA.2, a sub-variant of the Omicron coronavirus variant, has now become dominant globally, representing nearly 86 percent of all sequenced cases, according to the World Health Organization.

First detected in the early days of January, the sub-variant is even more transmissible than its highly contagious Omicron siblings, BA.1 and BA.1.1.

Why is it called the ‘stealth variant’?

That’s because BA.2 is slightly harder to track.

Global Picture

The rise of BA.2 has been blamed for recent surges in China as well as record infections in European countries like Germany and the UK. Yet some European countries are now seeing a slower uptick in new cases, or even a decline.
