Bengaluru Opposition Meet: A ‘Game-Changer’ In Indian Politics, Says Congress

Date:

Bengaluru: As many as 26 opposition parties are likely to attend the 2-day session in Bengaluru from July 17 to discuss a common agenda to defeat the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

The Congress rallied support from a total of 25 parties for the second Opposition unity meeting in Bengaluru beginning on Monday.

The meeting in Bengaluru follows the first such gathering in Patna last month to forge an anti-BJP political front. While this meeting was scheduled to be held at Shimla, HP, it was moved to Bengaluru due to heavy rains in north India.

Here’s All You Need To Know

  • Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has been deputed as in-charge to monitor all the preparations for the meeting, including arrangements for the leaders to stay in the city.
  • On Monday, Congress general secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal held a joint press conference at 11 am.
  • Congress general secretary KC Venugopal slammed the BJP administration at the Centre, accusing it of exploiting inquiry agencies for political gain.
  • Congress believes the opposition meeting in Bengaluru will be a ‘game-changer’ in Indian politics.
  • Addressing a press conference, Venugopal said that the BJP intends to “silence the voice of opposition,” citing the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha as instances.
  • An informal meeting is scheduled at 6 pm after which there will be dinner at 8 pm. On July 18, the meeting will kick off at 11 am and will continue till 4 pm.
  • Following this, there will be a press conference in which the campaign strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls may be announced.
  • Reportedly, the name of the opposition alliance will be decided, and the common minimum programme will be discussed in the Bengaluru meeting.
  • Several committees are expected to be formed which will hold meetings to deliberate on various problems that may arise in the alliance.
  • The meet may also discuss how to field a common opposition candidate on at least 80% of the Lok Sabha seats against BJP; how to have alliances in the states; and how to distribute tickets at key constituencies.
  • “In the meeting, deliberations will also be held on Uniform Civil Code (UCC).”
  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also confirmed its presence at the meeting on Sunday. This came after the Congress made its stand clear and said that it would oppose the Centre’s ordinance on administrative services in Delhi if a bill is brought to replace the ordinance in the Parliament.
  • Earlier, during the Opposition meeting in Bihar’s Patna on June 23, a rift was seen between the AAP and Congress, after the latter delayed its stand on the Centre’s ordinance.
  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in Bengaluru for the meeting despite her leg injury.
  • Meanwhile, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar will not be able to attend Monday’s meeting. However, the veteran politician will show his presence tomorrow.
