Olympic 2012 relay medals shake-up after Gay ban: IOC

Date:

Trinidad and Tobago are to be awarded silver and France bronze medals for the 4x100m relay at the 2012 Olympics after the United States were disqualified due to Tyson Gay’s doping ban.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the news to AFP on Friday, but said it would be making a formal declaration shortly.

“Everyone goes up one level,” a source at the IOC told AFP.

The US Olympic Committee (USOC) confirmed on Wednesday that it had been stripped of their silver medals from the 4x100m relay after they had originally come second behind Usain Bolt’s Jamaica and ahead of third placed Trinidad and Tobago.

USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said his organisation would “begin efforts to have the medals returned, and support all measures to protect clean athletes”.

France originally came in fifth, but Canada, fourth at the line, were disqualified on the night.

Gay had already returned his own medal after accepting a suspension in June of 2013 after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid in two out-of-competition tests.

The 2007 treble world champion had also accepted the disqualification of all results to July 15, 2012, the date he first used a product that contained the banned drug — forfeiting all prizes obtained from that date.
