New telecom policy, package for sugar cos among key cabinet decisions

The National Digital Communications Policy 2018 and a Rs 5,500 crore package for sugar industry was approved by the government today. This was a among the decisions taken by the union cabinet and the cabinet committee on economic affairs on Wednesday.

Here the the key decisions

  • Approved the National Digital Communications Policy-2018, India’s rank in ICT Index is expected to jump from 134th to 50th in the next 5 years, said Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha. It aims to attract $100 billion investment and create 4 million jobs in the sector by 2022.

  • A comprehensive policy approved to deal with excess sugar production in the country. This is the second financial package to bail out the sugar industry after Rs 8,500 crore was announced in June. Under the package, sugar mills would get a transport subsidy on sugar exported up to a maximum of 5 million tonnes and a financial assistance of Rs 13.88 per quintal of cane crushed during the forthcoming sugar season 2018-19, commencing next month.
  • Approved increasing of Government ownership in Goods and Services Tax Network and change in the existing structure with transitional plan. “Government has decided to convert GSTN, which was collectively owned by Centre, states and some private institutions. The in-principal decision was taken earlier and the Cabinet approved the proposal today,” said finance minister Arun Jaitley.
  • Approved financial assistance worth Rs 825 crore for relining of Sirhind Feeder Canal and Rajasthan Feeder Canal
  • Approved transfer (disinvestment) of incomplete projects of Hotel Gulmarg Ashok, Gulmarg and Hotel Patliputra Ashok, Patna to the State Governments of Jammu & Kashmir and Bihar respectively
  • With the aim to boost airport infrastructure approved construction of New Domestic Terminal Building and other allied structures at Patna Airport.
