“Misinformation Hallmark Of Global Hunger Index” As Centre Rejects Index Ranking

Date:

New Delhi: In a sharp response to the recent release of the Global Hunger Index, the Centre claimed that the report is a “consistent effort to taint India’s image as a Nation that does not fulfill the food security requirements,”

According to the report this year, India’s ranking dropped to 107th position out of 121 countries.

Here are the key takeaways:

  • Centre claimed that “the index is an erroneous measure of hunger and suffers from serious methodological issues.”
  • Centre points out that three out of four indicators used for the calculation of the index are related to children and cannot be representative of the entire population.
  • The report is not only disconnected from ground reality but also chooses to deliberately ignore efforts made by the Government to ensure food Security for the population, especially during the Covid Pandemic.
  • It further stated that “The fourth and most important indicator estimate of Proportion of Undernourished (PoU) population is based on an opinion poll conducted on a very ‘small sample size of 3000.”
  • Centre claimed that the Government is running the largest food security programme in the world.
