Malinga shows Sunrisers how it’s done

Date:

Hyderabad: Mumbai Indians swung back into the match, driven by a late onslaught by Lasith Malinga, to crush the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs on Saturday.

Chasing down the rather modest total of 158 set by the Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad opened with Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner, with Dhawan taking a special liking to Harbhajan Singh, smashing three boundaries one one maximum in the 4th over.

However, just when they were on the cruise mode, Warner was trapped by Malinga for 9, taking the score to 45/1 in 5 overs.

Dhawan walked back to his opening partner in the pavillion, cleaned by by McClenaghan for 42, bringing together Rahul and Ojha. Suchith claimed Ojha for 9 in the 9th over, taking the Sunrisers’ scoreboard to 74/3 in 10 overs, 84 runs still required from 60 balls.

Rahul and Bopara took the chase forward, but Rahul fell midway, done in by McClenaghan for 25, taking the score to 104/4, 54 from 30 balls required for a win.

Bopara had to leave as he was gotten rid of by McClenaghan for 23. Vihari was the next casualty for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, removed by Malinga for 16. He didn’t stop at that, getting rid of Praveen Kumar for 0 in the same over, bringing the Mumbai Indians right back into the match.

That over brought about a triple blow for the SRH team, the next batsmen being sent back was Steyn for 0. At this stage, SRH required 30 runs from 6 balls with 2 wickets remaining. Mumbai Indians sealed the deal restricting SRH to 137/8.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians won the toss and wasted no time in going out with their bats. Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel walked out for the Mumbai team and went all guns blazing to whisk the team off to 36/0 in 5 overs, but unfortunately for them that came to a halt when Parthiv Patel was removed by Steyn for 17, followed by Unmukt Chand, dismissed by Praveen Kumar for 5.

Rohit Sharma and Simmons got together and fished out the team, taking the score to 72/2 in 20 overs.

After a good clobbering in the 13th over, Simmons was taken by Steyn for 51, and Rohit Sharma departed in the next over, taken by Karan Veer Sharma for 24, bringing Rayudu and Pollard together. That pair didn’t last either, as Rayudu fell to Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for 7, the next wicket coming in the form of Harbhajan Singh, taken by Praveen Kumar for 0.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar rattled Mumbai Indians’ applecart, scalping two wickets in the last over – Pollard for 33 and Vinay Kumar for 0, bundling out the Mumbai team for 157/8.
