Justice Ranjan Gogoi appointed as new CJI, will assume office on October 3

Date:

The President of India has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India. Justice Gogoi will assume office on October 3, 2018, after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dipak Misra.

Justice Gogoi is currently the second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, Justice Gogoi, along with three other Supreme Court judges held a press conference raising concerns about the administration of the apex court and the independence of judiciary against the present Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

However, CJI Dipak Misra, as a matter of convention, recommended Justice Gogoi to be his successor.  Chief Justice Mishra will retire on October 2, but since it’s a holiday, October 1 will be his last working day.

Justice Gogoi was appointed as a judge in the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001. On February 12, 2011, he became the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.  He had also headed the special bench that monitors the update of National Register of Citizens to identify citizens and weed out illegally settled foreigners.
