Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has soared to the pinnacle of academic excellence, securing the top spot in the QS World University Rankings By Subject 2024. The prestigious accolade instills pride in the nation as JNU outshines its peers, underscoring its commitment to knowledge and innovation.

Under the visionary leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Santishree D Pandit, JNU extends gratitude to its stakeholders and the entire community for their invaluable contributions. Professor Pandit lauded the university’s ethos of excellence with equality, entrepreneurship with equity, inclusion with innovation, and integrity with intelligence, attributing the success to the collective efforts of the epistemic community.

Notably, JNU’s global acclaim extends beyond national borders, clinching the 20th position globally for its excellence in development studies. The achievement reflects India’s notable advancement in higher education, marked by a significant 20 percent increase in citations per paper, underscoring the nation’s robust research prowess.

This year’s QS rankings showcase India’s remarkable progress, with 69 Indian universities making it to the list, totaling 424 entries—an impressive 19.4 percent rise from the previous year. Of these entries, 72 percent are either new to the list, have shown improvement, or have maintained their positions, signaling a resounding affirmation of India’s academic prowess on the global stage.

The 12 Institutes of Eminence (IoE), though representing a fraction of Indian universities, contribute substantially to the country’s total entries, accounting for 40 percent. These IoEs lead the way with 47 of the 69 top-100 Indian positions, further solidifying India’s position as a knowledge powerhouse.

In addition to JNU’s stellar performance, other Indian institutions have also distinguished themselves in various disciplines. From the University of Delhi to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), India’s academic landscape is marked by excellence and innovation across diverse fields. Following closely behind are IIM Ahmedabad, making its mark at the 22nd position for Business and Management Studies, and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, which clinched the 24th spot globally in Dentistry. Saveetha Institute stands out as the sole Indian university to attain a perfect score of 100/100 in one of the QS indicators, specifically the H Index, thereby claiming the top spot in this metric within the Dentistry table.

IIT Guwahati has earned recognition as one of the world’s leading institutions for the fields of Data Science and Petroleum Engineering, securing a global ranking between 51-70 for both subjects. Moreover, its Petroleum Engineering program ranks between 51-100 globally. This year, IIT Guwahati has shown notable improvements in four subjects: Chemistry, moving from a rank of 301-250 to 251-300; Biological Sciences, advancing from 451-500 to 401-450; Environmental Studies, climbing from 301-350 to 201-250; and Economic & Econometrics, progressing from 501-530 to 451-500.
