SA vs IND: Ishan Kishan Withdrawn From Test Squad Due To Personal Reasons, KS Bharat In

Date:

New Delhi: Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, won’t be part of the upcoming 2-Test series against South Africa beginning on December 26. Following his request, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) released the Mumbai Indians star from the squad, and KS Bharat has been named as his replacement in the team led by Rohit Sharma.

“Mr Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicket-keeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad,” the BCCI said in a release on Sunday, December 17.

Ishan Kishan, part of the T20I squad in South Africa, didn’t play in the recently concluded 3-match series. Jitesh Sharma took over wicketkeeping duties in the matches following the rain-induced washout of the first T20I in Durban.

The BCCI did not provide details about Ishan Kishan’s request, but his absence is a significant loss for India in South Africa. Interestingly, Deepak Chahar withdrew from the ODI series on Saturday to be with his ailing father, and pacer Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the Test series due to injury concerns.

India is likely to have KL Rahul as the wicketkeeper, marking his return to the Test set-up for the first time since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Kishan, a key player in the home T20I series against Australia, featured in all 5 matches after being part of the ODI World Cup squad. The young wicketkeeper-batsman impressed with two fifties during the series.

In the recent unofficial Test against South Africa in Potchefstroom, KS Bharat captained India but managed only 6 runs. Although he was initially named in the squad for an intra-squad 3-day match and the 2nd unofficial Test against South Africa from December 26, Bharat will miss the latter as he joins the Test squad.

KS Bharat, who debuted in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home in 2023, played 5 Tests, including the World Test Championship final. However, he was dropped for the West Indies tour where Ishan Kishan took over wicketkeeping duties.
