ICJ to hold public hearing for Kulbhushan Jadhav case from February 18

Date:

The International Court of Justice, on Wednesday, announced that they will hold a Public hearing in Kulbhushan Jadhav case. The hearing is scheduled from February 18 to 21, 2019, in The Hague, the seat of the Court.

In the first round of oral arguments, that will take place on February 18, India will argue from 10 am to 1 pm while, Pakistan will present their first-round arguments on February 19, from 10 am to 1 pm.

The ICJ issued a press release saying, “The hearings will be streamed live and on demand (VOD) in English and French on the Court’s website as well as on UN Web TV, the United Nations online television channel.”

In April 2017, 47-year-old Jadhav was sentenced to death by the Pak military on spying charges. In May 2017, India moved the ICJ against the verdict.

After India’s appeal, the court passed an order putting a hold on Jadhav’s death sentence.

Both India and Pakistan have submitted detailed pleas and responses in the world court. In its report, India has accused Pakistan of violating Article 36(1) of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, according to which Pakistan has provided no information on Kulbhushan Jadhav’s detention until long after his arrest.

Jadhav, a former naval officer, was reportedly kidnapped while he was in Iran for business interests, says India in its report.

Whereas, in its submission to the ICJ, Pakistan had stated that Jadhav is not an ordinary person as he had entered the country with the intent of spying and carrying out sabotage activities.
