Fuel continues to march north; PM’s response to the challenge awaited

Fuel prices continued to rise for the twelfth consecutive day on Friday, with the retail price of petrol and diesel retail going up by 32 and 18 paise, respectively.

The demand for government intervention has been mounting with Congress President Rahul Gandhi asking the prime minister to accept the fuel challenge, after Modi accepted an online fitness challenge by Indian Cricket captain Virat Kohli on Thursday and Digvijay Singh mounting pressure on Friday.

On Friday, petrol was priced at Rs 77.83 per litre in Mumbai; 85.65 in Kolkata 80.47 and 80.80 in Chennai. The diesel prices were at 68.75 in Delhi; 73.2 in Mumbai ; 72.58 in Chennai and Kolkata in 71.30.
The prices came into effect at 6 am today.Domestic fuel prices have been increasing on the back of rising global crude oil price. In addition to it, the rupee is weakening against the US dollar, which has affected the rupee-dollar exchange rate, thus putting further burden on the prices here.

However, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday said the Centre would soon take quick measures to give some relief to the common people from the rising fuel prices
