Domestic violence cases surge due to COVID induced lockdown in India; similar spike recorded globally

Date:

The National Commission for Women(NCW) has registered an increase in the number of domestic violence cases that have been registered in the past two months due to the lockdown. According to the official data, the complaints regarding domestic violence have gone up by 2.5 times.

A total of 1,477 complaints were received by NCW between March 25 and May 31, 2020. Of the total complaints, 727 were received on the WhatsApp helpline.

Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani has, however, denied that there has been any increase in the number of cases but experts and activists are extremely distressed about the same. Not only in India but across the globe, domestic violence cases have been on a rise.

Even though the governments are taking steps to curb this situation, coronavirus still continues to be the biggest hurdle in the way of both the governments and the victims. UN Chief Antonio Guterres also urged governments around the world to put women’s safety first, while responding to the pandemic. UN Women, too, launched the Shadow Pandemic public awareness campaign, to bring attention to the growing cases of domestic abuse worldwide.

According to the World Health Organisation, domestic violence is aggravated due to restrictions and containment measures which are taken to limit the spread of the coronavirus. This has led to an increase in the number of cases.

Many assume that domestic violence is a grave concern mostly in Asian countries but the statistics and reports prove otherwise. Currently the situation in America, Spain, UK is also the same if not worse.   According to NBC News, Argentina’s emergency 137 helpline has seen a 67% rise in calls for help in April.

In May, the World Health Organization’s regional office said that emergency services across Europe have seen a sharp rise in domestic abuse calls under sweeping lockdowns imposed across the continent.

Women in Nigeria took to the streets in the first week of June to protest against rape and sexual violence against women. According to the reports on CNN, the protesters marched to the state parliament demanding it to declare a state of emergency on rape and sexual violence. On June 10, in response to the ongoing protests, the Nigerian State initiated measures to tackle the increasing cases of violence against women during the lockdown.

There are trackers to keep the count of people losing their lives to the coronavirus but there also needs to be an estimate of the lives that have been taken due to domestic violence and other such practices. A lot of women are able to reach out for help but there are still so many who continue to fight alone.

Here are some helpline numbers for people in India who might be fighting a similar battle. Let’s try to create a safer world for people inside closed doors as well.
