Democracy can’t function at the whims and fancies of anyone: PM Modi

Date:

As the Congress continues to disrupt the Parliament proceedings on the National Herald case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that democracy cannot run on anyone’s whims and fancies.. The PM was speaking at a forum of Dainik Jagran, and he sent the stern message to the opposition on its continuing disruption in Parliament proceedings.

PM’s message comes even as the winter session is all set to go in vain like the monsoon session, with none of the important bills likely to be passed anytime soon.

“People only talk about GST and Parliament, but there are several other measures for the poor that are pending in Parliament. It’s matter of sorrow that Parliament is not running,” said PM Modi.

Stating that he wants to make India’s development journey a ‘Jan Andolan’, he said, “Everyone must feel he or she is working for India’s progress. The first thing is to have faith in the people and their strengths. This becomes ‘Lok Shakti’.”

Modi also highlighted the importance of public participation in a democracy and said that the definition of democracy could not be restricted only to elections and the governments.

“Democracy is strengthened by people’s participation,” he said.

Invoking Mahatma Gandhi to highlight the importance of ‘jan bhaagidari’, Modi credited the Father of the Nation for bringing a big change in the process of the freedom struggle.

“Mahatma Gandhi transformed the freedom struggle into a ‘Jan Andolan’. He turned a common man into a soldier of the freedom struggle,” he added.

He also took the opportunity to express his concern over the repeated disruptions in the Parliament and said that the rights of the poor are being ignored with the Parliament not functioning.
