New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) The CPI(M) today asked the Centreto activate National Disaster Management Authority toundertake relief operations on a war footing in flood-hitBihar and to take long-term measures like de-silting Gangawhich has largely caused the calamity. "The Politburo calls upon Central government to provideall required assistance and activate National DisasterManagement Authority to undertake relief and rehabilitationoperations on a war footing. "It calls upon the Central government to take long-termmeasures including de-silting of Ganga which every year iscausing floods and consequent damage," it said in a statement. The party also asked Nitish Kumar government in the stateto organise provision of immediate relief and adequatecompensation for those who have lost "virtually everything". 135 people have lost their lives due to the floods causedby swollen Ganga, Sone, Punpun, Burhi Gandak, Ghaghra, Kosiand other rivers. According to the state disaster management department,the inundation has affected around 31.33 lakh people in 1,934villages in 12 districts. PTI ENMRG
