Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed a close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, on a three-day remand for staying in Bangladesh illegally.
Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant, also a convicted killer of music baron Gulshan Kumar, was arrested when he was roaming Khilgaon area suspiciously on Tuesday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Nuru Miah passed the order after Sub-Inspector of Detective Branch of police Golam Rusul, also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before it with a seven-day remand prayer.
Merchant was arrested two days after he was released from a Kashimpur jail in Gazipur.
Merchant, who was serving life sentence in an Indian jail since 2002, was reported absconding by Mumbai police after being released on parole in April 2009 to visit his family in Mumbra, a small town about 40 km from Mumbai.
The Detective Branch then arrested Merchant on the night of May 28, 2009 from the residence of one Kamal Miah at Mourail in Bramhanbaria district.
He was later convicted for intruding and illegally staying in Bangladesh.
