Chapel built on Chorao Island dedicated to Saint Teresa

Panaji, Sept 4 (PTI) A chapel built on Chorao Islandalong the Mandovi river near here became the first such prayerplace in Goa to be dedicated to Mother Teresa who attainedsainthood today. The chapel, situated along the road connecting theisland to the river front, was inaugurated today with specialservice for Saint Teresa. It has the statue of Teresa, whose canonisation washeld at Vatican City, at its entrance. "This is an initiative of the people. The locals tookthe lead and it was inaugurated today on the day when MotherTeresa attained sainthood. This is the first ever chapel ofsuch kind in the state. I have no idea whether there are anychapels dedicated to Mother Teresa elsewhere in country," FrGabriel Coutinho, parish priest from Vasco, told PTI. In Vatican City, Pope Francis proclaimed Mother Teresaof Kolkata a saint, hailing her as the personification ofmaternal love and a powerful advocate for the poor. Coutinho, posted at Chorao island for eight yearsbefore being transferred to Vasco parish, said the chapelwill inspire many to emulate Teresa’s preaching of servingthe needy people. In his preaching, local priest Fr Minguel Pereiraasked people to learn from the life of Teresa who has beenengaged in good deeds throughout her entire life.
