Battle for State: Live Updates, polling begins in 73 seats in UP

Voting for first phase of UP elections has begun. Voting is under process for 73 seats in the western Uttar Pradesh .

The districts going to the polls in the first phase are Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura, Hathras, Agra, Firozabad, Etah and Kasganj.

Etah’s Jalesar is the smallest constituency in terms of electorate, while Ghaziabad’s Sahibabad is the largest constituency in terms of electorate.

Voter turnout will increase with the rising sun, as to woo voters in Baraut, Baghpat EC officials gave roses.

The election is seen as a referendum on PM Narendra Modi’s demonetisation initiative.

In Sardhana(Meerut), Police detained Gagan Som, brother of BJP candidate Sangeet Som for carrying a pistol inside poll booth. Sangeet Som who is contesting from Sardhana is facing Atul Pradhan of SP and Imran Qureshi of BSP.

Amar Singh castes his vote at the Bal Bharti Public School in Sahibabad.

Congress candidate from Mathura Pradeep Mathur, who is also CLP leader, performs Yamuna Arti in Mathura.

Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan cast his vote in Muzaffarnagar.

Voting stops at booth numbers 131, 132 and 133 due to problems in electronic voting machines (EVMs) at Barni village of Jalesar in Eta.
