Nepal: Nepal’s deadly earthquake has left behind a trail of destruction across the Himalayan kingdom. Aerial footage taken on Tuesday showed collapsed buildings in the capital, Kathmandu, and whole villages destroyed in the surrounding countryside, after Saturday’s 7.9 magnitude quake. Nepal’s prime minister warned the death toll could reach as high as 10,000. In Kathmandu, as elsewhere, thousands are sleeping on pavements, roads and in parks, many under makeshift tents. The situation is worse in remote rural areas. Highways have been blocked by landslides, and many villages and communities are without water and electricity, and villagers are surviving on salvaged food and with no outside help. While aid has begun arriving in the capital, including food, medical supplies, tents and dogs trained for rescue efforts, the authorities are struggling to deliver relief further afield.
